How to Increase Your Metabolism with a Healthy Breakfast

Losing weight is not all about pain and hunger. In fact, the healthiest weight loss always happens as you eat healthily and don’t skip meals.  Breakfast is the meal most often overlooked by many and yet this is probably the most important eating of the day for those losing weight. Learning about the right foods to eat for breakfast is about learning how to increase your metabolism and lose weight.

The best value of a nutritious breakfast is the way it provides fuel or energy to see you well into each day.  Eat well at breakfast and you won’t hunger for sweet morning treats long before lunch. This allows your body to burn calories fast and chew up this excess weight that you want to shed. An empty stomach generally means reduced energy, sluggish performance and less fat loss.

A healthy breakfast sends a ‘Go’ message to your body allowing it to expend energy on physical tasks. No breakfast sends a ‘Slow’ message to your body telling it to conserve energy. You body responds in just the same way it would if you were starving and burns fewer calories just to survive. This is not what you want it to do.

Research shows us that eating the right kind of breakfast is not just a way of discovering how to increase your metabolism healthily. It also reduces our likelihood of developing diabetes. Given the high proportion of adults in the western world at risk of diabetes, this is well worth considering.

So what are the components of a healthy breakfast?  What should we eat every morning to stay full, burn calories, lose weight and avoid diabetes?
1.    Make sure you eat some protein. This provides the energy you need to boost your metabolism.
2.    Include whole grains to your breakfast menu. This reduces the risk of heart disease.
3.    Avoid the ‘bad’, high GI carbs found in such as pancakes white bread and waffles.
4.    Avoid (or at least limit) fatty foods like sausage and ham.
5.    Choose from breakfast foods including

  • Whole grain cereal with skim milk
  • Oatmeal with fruit and skim milk.
  • Low fat and low sugar yogurt with fresh fruit
  • Scrambled egg whites or an vegetable and egg white omelet

A very real trap when establishing how to increase your metabolism by eating a healthy breakfast, is wading through misleading advertising about breakfast cereals.  From producers of sugar laden, caloric products come messages that are deceiving and unhealthy. Take the time to check the contents of cereal packs before you buy and beware ‘healthy’ cereal bars. Avoid anything that is sweetened before you prepare it. You can always do this yourself with a splash of honey or a slice of fresh fruit.

Learn how to boost metabolism and lose weight by starting the right way every morning with a healthy breakfast. You’ll lose weight and never look back!
